Judge Halts 1,700 Foreclosures in Cook County
Good news for some who live in Cook County: a circuit judge has halted nearly 1,700 foreclosures temporarily.
According to the Chicago Tribune one of the top three law firms used by mortgage services, Fisher and Shapiro LLC, changed affidavits in some of their foreclosure cases. The company has admitted to altering the affidavit's content, removing the signature page then reattaching it after altering the content. Most of these documents had additional inspection costs, taxes, insurance and preservation costs added, as well as more attorneys' fees.
Most of the cases brought to the attention of the court were filed over the past three years. At this time it is uncertain as to who changed the documents, nor are all of the persons affected by these changes aware that their documents had been altered falsely.
The circuit judge ordered Fisher and Shapiro to vacate all judgments of foreclosures, as well as any judicial sales that occurred as a result and to re-file these motions.
