Dave Duerson Filed for Bankruptcy in September
Although the news of Dave Duerson's suicide was tragic enough for the football community, their surprise at the incident may be lessened after learning that he filed for bankruptcy in September of last year.
The former NFL safety for the Chicago Bears filed for personal bankruptcy, listing more than $34 million in assets from a court settlement for his food company. He also listed $14.7 million in liabilities from his business dealings. However, Duerson was never able to collect the money owed him due to a concurrent bankruptcy case filed by the defendants.
Yet his bankruptcy lawyer, Zach Shelomith, was surprised by the news of his death since the bankruptcy case was reportedly going well. Even though he was only entitled to fifty percent of the judgment, as thirty percent would have gone to his ex-wife, "He seemed extremely upbeat," Shelomith added.
Among the assets listed in his Chapter 7 bankruptcy filing were a 2002 Cadillac Escalade, a set of golf clubs and a checking account.
