Diocese Addresses Bankruptcy and Sex Abuse Claims
Not only does one diocese have to worry about their upcoming bankruptcy, but they also have sex abuse claims that must be factored in to the final amount of monies due.
A press release was issued by the Archdiocese this week announcing that any sex abuse victims that wish to file a claim against the church during its bankruptcy period must file by February 1, 2011. This includes any individuals who became victims at the hands of clergy, teachers, staff and any other church employees.
As a condition of its bankruptcy, the church must run ads in multiple publications. As of this Sunday, ads will be seen in local, well-read publications. Since any business that files for bankruptcy must not only announce its bankruptcy, but place a call for claims in local newspapers, the church is required by law to place these announcements in qualifying news outlets. Any claims against the church that are not related to sex abuse must be filed by October 17th.
