Sexual Abuse Claims force Religious Order into Bankruptcy

Sexual abuse claims have forced a Catholic religious order to file for bankruptcy this year.
The Christian Brothers runs schools in Seattle and across the country has been charged with sexual abuse in several of its brothers. Although they have not released the number of claims pending against the brotherhood, the victim's attorneys believe there to be at least 50 claims at this time. Most of these come from a now-defunct school, the Briscoe Memorial School, in Kent.
Other cases have been filed against Edward Courtney, a brother who taught at Seattle's O'Dea High School. To combat the financial problems caused by these multiple lawsuits, the order filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in the Southern District of New York.
